Do you still remember the days when all the facts we would ever need to know were contained in a few volumes of an encyclopedia? A few generations ago things changed so slowly that you could use these volumes for all your school projects and still hand them down to your children. Life has changed dramatically in the information age. We have every fact at our fingertips – and even get updates as things change. Yet, with all this knowledge, most people are still very unwise.

Proverbs 9:10 tells us that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Having all the knowledge of scripture and theological terms does not make you wise. Wisdom is not about knowing many facts but about knowing the person of Jesus Christ.

Jesus demonstrated the perfect fear of God by his perfect obedience to the will of God. As Jared Wilson says Jesus is wisdom personified. When we receive Jesus Christ, we also receive the Holy Spirit who brings wisdom into our hearts. He fills us with reverence for God, convicts us of our sin and guides us in all truth.
Jesus commanded us to love God with our hearts, soul and mind (Matthew 22:37). We must study his word to get to know him better, but all this knowledge is futile if we don’t have love for Jesus.
“If you know Jesus, you know the true wisdom of the ages.”– Jared Wilson
