I have been dreaming about writing this post for three years. This dream began mulling around my mind at a time when our hearts were shattered after the adoption we had been pursuing ended in tragedy. My prayer was that my story would point others to our debt Jesus paid for on the cross.
The theme of adoption is weaved throughout scripture, starting with God’s adoption of the Israelites, through to the adoption of Jesus by his earthly father – Joseph, and ending in the assurance of our adoption as heirs of the Father, through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
This world is an ugly unfair place, filled with evil and injustice. Bad things happen to good people and bad people get everything they want. We learn repeatedly that there will never be a “happily ever after” this side of God’s kingdom, but when our hearts are broken again we are left feeling hopeless.
Allow me to (re)introduce you to Moses – the first person to be adopted in the Bible. Although Moses was not perfect, God designed his story to fulfil his purpose of freeing the Israelites from captivity. God turned the complicated start and character flaws of this Hebrew boy turned Egyptian prince into a story of great leadership and redemption. The journey of Moses is a beautiful illustration of how God can use anyone, from any background as an instrument in his hand.
During the last year, our heavenly Father has taken us on a journey to new possibilities, revealing his will for the future of our family. This is our story of how we came to decide to become adoptive parents.
In Ephesians 1, Apostle Paul shows us the spiritual blessings God has planned for us since the beginning of time. Spiritual blessings of an election, a glorious inheritance, and a perfect relationship with him where we live with him forever. The gratitude for these blessings, when taken to heart, far surpasses any natural blessings we can ever receive here on this side of the heavenly realm.
Have you noticed? The sun is shining a bit brighter. The birds are chirping a bit louder. The days are getting longer and warmer. The smell of spring is in the air. The seasons are changing.
Many of us have the privilege of celebrating our fathers this weekend. This is a very special opportunity to reflect on the character of our Heavenly Father as we see his love reflected in the men who have done their best to love us and raise us.
My mom is the best mother in the world. She has taught me many lessons in my life and her unwavering support has carried me throughout my life. My mom has also inspired me to want to be a mother myself. This longing still lives in my heart and this is why Mother’s day is a complicated celebration for me.
