{Book Club} Why do we care about Satan’s lies?

Have you ever read a post on social media, or heard someone casually preach a popular phrase that, like an umpire in a football match, stopped you in your tracks and demanded a second look?

You know the type of phrase – the words are all too familiar, but you just cannot put your finger on exactly where in the Bible you will find the verse that is evidence of this “truth”.

In this information age, if you can’t find the verse, it probably does not exist.

Apostle Paul reminds us to be wary of the crafty deception of our enemy:

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ… Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.”

2 Corinthians 11: 3; 14-15
2 Corinthians 11 verse 3

Satan comes as an angel of light to “illuminate” and “enlighten” us with lies that sound like they could be true. In this way, he slowly deviates our path from the direction of Truth to follow his gospel.

Lies such as “God just wants you to be happy” so you “you need to live your truth” because “you only live once”.

These lies, and many like them, sound innocent enough, but when we delve a little deeper, we realize that they distort the gospel.  At their core, these lies diminish the greatness of God and elevate the godliness of humans resulting in an upside-down gospel.

“The best thing to do is to expose the lies, examine how they work, explore why they’re so compelling, and explain how to overcome them with the truth.”

Jared C. Wilson in The Gospel According to Satan.

We care about Satan’s lies because we love Jesus, and we don’t want anything, or anyone, to prevent us from meeting him someday soon.
